SSI seeks a dynamic professional to manage our Leadership Academy in Phnom Penh. The Leadership Academy is a residential home and training facility where 34 rural students live and study. They are learning how to become the leaders of our innovative enterprise approach to rural education reform based in Aural District of Kampong Speu Province. The incumbent will manage all academy operations including student supervision and self-governance, scholarship selection and annual evaluations. S/he will assist in the design and implementation of the SSI Leadership Curriculum and in-house social enterprise, The English Zone. As teacher, mentor and manager, the successful candidate will be expected to teach English and leadership classes, ensure student well-being and safety, support individual and group community service projects, oversee facility maintenance, collaborate with partner organizations, and facilitate supplementary training programs including entrepreneurship, visitor/volunteer assistance and career development.

The Leadership Academy Program Manager will work in close collaboration with senior management in Cambodia and the US on all program activities in a tightly knit teamwork environment. S/he is expected to embrace and advance the SSI core values of participation, communication, honesty, trust, solidarity and gender equality. The position is based in Phnom Penh Thmeay and involves regular multi-day visits to our field site in Kampong Speu to work with the village-based staff and community members. Sustainable Schools International is seeking a management and education specialist for our international advisory team. We drive economic development by supporting education through social enterprise. Our primary focus is rural Cambodia, where a severely under-resourced education system perpetuates the cycle of rural poverty. We develop the human and financial resources to support schools in rural communities, to stop child exploitation before it starts.

To grow our impact beyond our pilot area, we need to build our in-country capacity. To this end, we are looking for an experienced professional to lead and mentor our Cambodian team. Retired people, those on sabbatical, and recent graduates (master’s degree or higher) are encouraged to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in having an immediate and concrete effect via organizational strengthening/staff development, social enterprise, rural education, and/or youth empowerment. The position is for 6 months starting June 1, 2015 and is based at SSI’s Leadership Academy in Phnom Penh. The advisor will work closely with US and local staff plus 34 residential students of high school and college age. Benefits include round-trip air ticket, wireless/computer access, telephone (for use in Cambodia only), housing, a $500/month stipend, and all work-related expenses.

Location: SSI Leadership Academy, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Focus of Service: Improve Leadership Academy management through staff training/mentoring; student leadership and self-governance support; communications, policy and procedural refinements, and start-up activities for SSI’s onsite social enterprise, “ The English Zone.”

Length of Service: June 1 – December 1, 2015 (with possible extension)

Expectations and Deliverables: A commitment of 28 hours minimum per week is expected (excluding holidays) however the schedule is somewhat flexible and can be arranged to meet the needs and desires of the successful candidate.

  • Staff meetings and mentoring sessions (5 hours/week).
